Blueprints

One of the original aims of the game was: Only copy/paste blueprints exist and they do not persist longer than a single game. Fosters replayabilty and creativity.

A lot of different opinions on this one so it's pretty clear it was a poor design decision that limits some play styles. Therefore in 0.2.7 the copy/paste mechanism is extended to allow for a local library of saved blueprints:

  • [B] to open the window
  • Copying a blueprint [Ctrl+C] places it on the clipboard
  • Saving the clipboard moves the blueprint to the library
  • The library is saved locally and made available in all games
  • Tags for organisation and filtering

Still todo:

  • Toggle entity types on the fly
  • Import/export by string for sharing
  • Better preview with more detail exposed
  • Flip N/S and E/W
  • Total raw materials view

I think it's a good decision. Those who are really into creating their own BP's (raises hand) will still avoid using somebody else's prints. This is more QoL than anything as remaking a blueprint you like just becomes tedious between games. Other playstyles almost like to compete to see who makes the best print and that can foster a healthy community in the game as well.

If blueprint sharing becomes a thing, a question that remains (for me) is how to encourage new players to try and build first before copying a popular third-party blueprint. There may be no simple answer without straying down the path of artificially constraining yet another style of play, or harming a potential sub-community.

So, keep improving the overall build experience and let the chips fall where they may.
